GREEN TEA

Ah Green tea, I drink this every day contributing to my daily liquid intake and it helps me get my daily dose of antioxidants. It has been used for thousands of years primarily in Asia but it has now been spread all over the world. Green tea contains polyphenols which is an antioxidant. Polyphenols are primarily catechins, and there are six different types. The one that has been most extensively studied is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). There have been many studies in green tea. Studies show that green tea benefits weight loss – it helps your body burn fat much more efficiently. Studies also show green tea to lower bad cholesterol and to increase healthy cholesterol, and may prevent certain types cancer. It also improves cardiac health. Also to keep in mind that caffeine in green tea is much lower than the caffeine content in coffee. Wake upper with your daily green cuppa!

PRUNES

Turbo charged with antioxidants and ready to attack free radicals roaming around in the body which cause structural damage to the cells. This is bad news, as studies in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry show such damage to be a prime cause of many cancers. Prunes also contain lutein to prevent eyesight failure and slow-release sugars to keep energy levels up during the day. I must say that apart from keeping me regular! I do find prunes to have a significant impact on boosting my health.

CABBAGE

It may not be the favourite Sunday roast member on your plate, but in your body it increases the enzyme levels. Research at Standford University in the US lay claims that sulforaphane, found in cabbage, disarm cancer-causing free radicals. Surprisingly, cabbage contains more vitamin C than oranges.

BEETROOT

Lets not ‘beet’ around the bush for this powerful blood cleanser and toner of the kidney and liver is beneficial for slimming and fat digestion. One study on beetroot discovered that it has a blood sugar stabilising effect. Beet fibre has been shown to have cholesterol lowering capabilities. In a study on rats with induced high blood cholesterol, a red beet fibre diet caused a reduction of LDL cholesterol (Low-density lipoprotein known as “bad” cholesterol), and a significant increase in HDL cholesterol (High-density lipoprotein known as “good” cholesterol.

CINNAMON

Some of you Starbucks coffee drinkers know it as the shaker on the counter. US Department of Agriculture made a discovery that eating 1g a day for six weeks reduced blood sugar and bad cholesterol by a significant amount. One study discovered that smelling cinnamon boosts cognitive function and memory.

GUAVA

The strangely shaped fruit you might find in your supermarket is claimed by the US Department of Agriculture to be boosted with the highest concentration of lycopene – yes even higher than tomatoes. This fruit is cultivated in the Asian countries. It is green in colour and is shaped a bit like a pear.

SWISS CHARD

Unlike the Swiss watch, it’s not actually from Switzerland, it actually grows in the sunny Mediterranean. Packed with lutein and zeaxanthin, which research at Harvard University found it protects your retinas by absorbing shortwave light. Think I better get some it may prevent me from going to spec savers.
